On his retirement in 1996 he has devoted his spare time working for the benefit of the local community. He chaired the Market Towns Initiative, which saw major improvements to the Public Hall and the Clock Tower and the provision of the skateboard park.
In 2000 he volunteered to work for the local health organisation with a particular responsibility for patients’ welfare and addressing the concerns of the public.
He spent ten years as a district councillor that overlapped with ten years service on the Town Council where he was twice Mayor.
His last actions there were to bring the control of the Market to Beccles and to put allotment holders in control of the allotments.
