Beccles Town Council welcomes you in joining us to mark the historic 75th anniversary of VE Day by, at 11am on Friday 8th May 2020, paying your quiet respects to those who gave their lives in the defence of this country between 1939 and 1945.

The words of The Kohima, that Covid-19 prevents us all from publicly assembling to hear, are so poignant in these strange times we are all trying to endure:

‘When You Go Home, Tell Them Of Us And Say,
For Your Tomorrow, We Gave Our Today.’

But we should also remember that those that survived, wanted to celebrate the end of those years of conflict, so it is also time to hang up the bunting and raise a glass to better times. Please go to Toolkit – VE Day 75 for some great ideas for making your own bunting and for posters to pin up in your window.

Beccles Town Council had been working hard behind the scenes to hold a street party and hold a commemoration service, but social distancing means that has not been possible. We had also been working hard with East Suffolk Council to at least fly the Union Flag from the Clock Tower, but a broken pulley and working restrictions have been against us.

Finally remember too, the words of The Exhortation:

“They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old,
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun, and in the morning,
We will remember them.”

and remember that the conflict still carried on for another three months, so pause your thoughts and raise a glass on Victory in Japan Day, the 15th August 2020, when finally the world could relax.
