Beccles History

1260:
In 1260 Beccles was granted the right to hold a yearly fair on the night and morning of St. Matthew the Apostle. (Sept 21st)

1369:
A bequest of 1369 by Robert de Mutford left money for the church.(St Michaels)

1419:
Beccles was formally two parishes, but that called St Mary Endgate at the south of the town, had its church demolished by order of Queen Elizabeth, on the plea " that the parishes of Beccles and Endgate had been for so many years blended together, that the bounds and limits of them could not be known in 1419.

1500:
Construction of Beccles Church started around 1500, under the direction of the monks of the Abbey of St Edmundsbury, the important pilgrimage destination in the nearby town of Bury St. Edmunds.

1544:
Sir John Leman born. Later Mayor Of London 1612

1631:
The Sir John Leman High School was founded in 1631 by Sir John Leman, then Lord Mayor of London and Prime Warden of the Fishmongers’ Company.

1749:
Edmund Nelson marries Catherine Suckling at St Michaels Church May 11th 1749. Horatio Nelsons parents.

1873:
In 1873 Clowes acquired the business of the Caxton Printing Works in Beccles

1939:
PIKE COMPEITION of the Beccles Angling Club, for the Bell Cup, was won by Mr C Cattermole of Beccles with a 16lb 2oz pike.
